By Janet Kornblum, USA TODAY

GLENDALE, Calif. — The lights are dimmed, the shades are drawn, the computer screen is on and Dave Walvoord, Xiao Zhang and Han Lei are staring at a porcupine butt.
Specifically, this porcupine butt belongs to an animated character in DreamWorks Animation's upcoming movie Over the Hedge. And Walvoord, a computer graphics supervisor, is in his office working with two of DreamWorks' newest employees — recruited straight out of college as part of a new DreamWorks educational initiative. Their job: to light the scene so the motion of the quills looks just right.

Animation is not what it used to be.

Where cartoons of yesteryear, like Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse, were once hand-drawn in two dimensions, movie hits such as The Incredibles (Pixar) and Shrek 1 and 2 (DreamWorks) are painstakingly designed, modeled, rigged, surfaced and lighted by teams of animators who have to be as artistic and creative as they are technological. Studios are constantly developing new technology to bring out details: Fur can rustle with the wind, skin can now almost glisten like the real thing (even if it does happen to be green). And porcupine quills can now bristle.

Studios such as DreamWorks Animation, Disney Animation and Pixar look to the top colleges and universities for the next generation of animators. Several companies have recruitment and other programs; Disney Animation, for instance, has a summer internship in the technology department.

Last year, in an effort to both recruit new animators and make sure colleges had the right kind of curriculum to turn out high-quality professionals, DreamWorks initiated a program in which employees go into classrooms to either teach or critique students' work, depending on the needs of the school.

So far, they've been in seven top schools in the USA and Canada, including San Jose State University, Ohio State University in Columbus and Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Fla. It also has programs at other schools, says Marilyn Friedman, who runs DreamWorks' outreach program.

The result: this year the program yielded a crop of 18 students who are now full-time employees, including Zhang, 30, and Lei, 34, both natives of China and graduates of Texas A&M University in College Station.

"Our ambition is for that number to get bigger and bigger and to happen year in and year out," DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg told a group of educators who visited the DreamWorks campus recently to discuss the pilot program. "It's working."

Collaborations in which professionals go into universities to share their craft are not new. But in times of tight budgets, some schools rely on it.

By Bob Riha, Jr., USA TODAY
Kathy Altieri, a DreamWorks art designer, left, reviews artwork with Ali Kaplan, 27, at the Pasadena Arts Center in Pasadena, Calif.

"We need this kind of collaboration for our program to fly," says Courtney Granner, a professor in the school of art and design at San Jose State. Classes also help students keep up; even at the best schools, professors can't give the same up-to-the-minute information that working professionals can.

"There is such a transition in the entire field," says Ali Kaplan, 27, of Stilwell, Kan., who hopes to go into animated movies and is taking a course in visual design from DreamWorks employees at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif.

DreamWorks also benefits. "You can find a lot of good people and a lot of OK people," says John Tarnoff, head of outreach and artistic development. "But it's always difficult to find, really, the best. I think this program helps widen the net and helps us find people earlier who are going to develop."

Today's computer animation is getting more competitive, according to a recent report by analyst Katherine Styponias at Prudential Equity Group. Competitors include Pixar, LucasFilms, Twentieth Century Fox Studios, Disney and Miramax.

And there have been signs of slowing DVD sales. DreamWorks — along with Pixar — recently lowered earnings estimates after failing to sell as many DVDs of Shrek 2 and The Incredibles as projected. (DreamWorks reports its earnings today.)

But in the classroom, the long-term future looks hopeful.

On a recent August night, Kathy Altieri, production designer for DreamWorks' upcoming Over the Hedge, taught the 13th week of the 15-week course on visual development at Art Center. She gave career tips and detailed critiques of their work, offering advice on lighting, color and composition to create the most dramatic effect.

"For me, personally, it forces me to hone my craft. From a studio standpoint, it completely focuses our energies and the students' energies in the same direction."

For Solim You, 28, a student in her class, having teachers who currently work in the field means getting to tap into their knowledge.

"What they're doing is what I want to do," she says. "It's my dream."

It's all about producing manga and anime style art on a computer using painter and/or photoshop and it covers lots of different styles and techniques and has good descriptions and explanations. definitely worth checking out!

For anime:
I love the character design work of Toshiro Kawamoto (cowboy bebop, goldenboy) and if you have never seen goldenboy and don't mind hentai-ish (perverted) comedy ,watch it! the first episode deals with the software industry and the last with the animation industry!

Terada Matsuya (character designer for blood-the last vampire) has some amazing artbooks and combines some of the painting techniques of the great fantasy illustrators and adds nice weight to his characters.

Range Murata (blue sub six) has a nice style and great sense of clothing design and just design in general. His artbooks are great too.

And pretty much anything by production ig and gainax will be wonderfully animated and inspiring to me (even if their stories are kinda out there), definitely check out gainax's otaku no video if you haven't already

For manga:
Chen shu-fen and Common are a taiwanese couple who have a "glamour realism" doing beautiful cg water color stuff (they have an artbook called the library)

Takeshi Obata (who worked with a writer named hotta yumi to create hikaru no go) is a phenominal artist, who picks great camera angles and draws very realistically for the scenery and clothing and has a very clean style

Masakazua Katsura (video girl ai, dna2, I's) - draws the cutest girls and best panty and butt shots (very important for an anime/manga artist)

Oh Great! (Tenjou Tenge, Air Gear) - brilliant and super perverted artist who draws incredibly sexy girls (very echi) but also very well musculatured guys and great fight scenes

Nobuhiro Watsuki (rurouni kenshin) great action sequences, nice cartooney distortions and framing and layout

And for a generally kick ass artbook, check out Capcom design works (bengus and his coworkers kick ass) - but that style is probably the most heavily emulated by todays american comic book artists, like madeira and udon

There are a lot more I admire (especially those of a particular style) but that should be enough to get a discussion going

I have a project coming up where I need a fair amount of characters in particular styles, in a short amount of time, and it leaves me no real time or budget to develop a cast. So, I was looking to go to one of the services in Japan that sells exclusive rights to a catalog of pre-developed characters. Trouble is, that I have no idea how to get hold of them, since I no longer work for a company that does business in Japan, and like an idiot didn't think to write down their info back when I did have it at my disposal.

If anyone has any leads, I would really appreciate it.

I have only the vaguest understanding of anime; that the basic human figure is drawn from a framework of polygons. SVG is pretty good at drawing polygons, so I figured I'd undertake an experiment to draw the framework for an anime human body in SVG.

SVG is an XML language, meaning it's fairly portable.

Incidentally I can't draw to save my life. But I can code.

I've turned 37 years old not too long ago, and am now looking back into my past and beginning to brush the dust off of a lot of old hobbies. Drawing was a hobby of mine throughout high school, but I abandoned it after entering the service.

Now, having become an old man, I am attempting to reclaim some of my youthful vitality and creativity by drawing again... and having been a fan of Anime & Magna, why not pursue that interest? So I've purchased several How to Draw Magna books, and will be receiving a new computer capable of handling graphics applications next week (this existing computer is about 4 years old and not going to last much longer).

I will be using Macromedia Freehand & Flash, and want to know if anyone can make suggestions with respect to a good pen tablet.

Thanks,

Also, I have over 15 years of video production and animation experience, so if anyone ever needs help getting their project that last step to video/DVD/film, or whatever, I would be more than happy to give helpful advice and tips. Oh, and I use to work at ADV Films, so have even worked on Anime for a living.
I thought I should introduce myself to the "tribe". I'm really more of a "manga" guy, than "anime" but I guess there's a lot of crossover. (or, maybe I'm in the wrong tribe? is there a manga artist tribe?)
I've been drawing comics, in a manga style, for about 5 years now. My interest is in yaoi -- a sub-genre of shojo (girls) comics.
A couple of my comics have been published in anthologies, but I'm still very much a beginner. I'm finally getting good enough to begin to see what I need to learn.
Finally, here's a picture I did in my sketchbook today, while thinking about Valentine's day.
